I took this photo from the new road that was built in 1980 to provide vehicle access half way up the hill between San Mamete and Castello. Before 1980 (for several centuries) access to this village was by donkey path only. The permanent population is now 50. In summer, that number peaks to around 500.

The building on the left is the church. The greenery at the front is various fruit and vegetable gardens. These people had to be self-reliant. I featured one garden in the previous email.
When you go to the other side of the lake, and look across to San Mamete (at water level), you can see Castello on the hill. It is the small, white blob in the middle.
These houses are clustered around what is left of the town square in Castello.
This was the osteria (or inn) in the days when there were sufficient people to support it.
There is a house on each level, but not all are inhabited all year.
This small courtyard was immaculate .....
Everything is on a different level .......
Nice paint! It must have been pretty bright when it was new.
This is the main walk up from the new road. The open gravel area is the church courtyard.
Some view form the church?
This was just another road/path/alley through the village but some one has knocked two arches through the stone and turned it into their own private terrace with views.
I'm not sure why this man is chained to the wall ... perhaps he didn't pay his parking fines in Castello or perhaps he was the one who tried to convert a public thoroughfare into his own, private deck!.
