I saw some interesting things today. The first happened in rue de l'Arbre Sec. The emergency service, a cross between our SES and fire departments, is called the Sapeurs Pomptieres de Paris (Sappers and Firemen of Paris). Today they came to our street and raised their big ladder.

They turned it to the right to face the direction they wanted to reach.
Then the chief donned his gloves, utility belt and very shiny helmet........ and up he went to an apartment at the very top of this 5 storey building.
The window was locked so he broke the glass and climbed inside. We don't know what happened next. We waited for ages and nothing happened. No ambulance. No police. After about 40 minutes the boys just packed up all their toys and went home!
Later in the day, when we were way out in the suburbs, we spotted this Pompes Funebres - Funeral Directors.
And the sign says..... The Monument of the Month - May 2011 - the whole lot for 1,982 euros including GST. ($2,870 AUD) I don't know whether this is good value or not and perhaps I don't want to find out.
And finally, coming back from the far suburbs by train......
.... we arrived at ground level at Paris St Lazarre station - one of the "big" ones. Ground level is the very top of the photo. We had to go down four levels to connect to our Metro train. I took this photo half way down. This is 6.45pm on a Saturday evening.
