4. The Paris Sewer System

Today we went underground to the Museum of Sewers.  It was very interesting.  It was also very smelly.  And when I found myself walking across a metal grid with water (and God knows what else) rushing underneath  me - I felt a bit weak in the knees.  The following photos are pretty thrilling - so I hope you're impressed!

This was the point at which I became a bit weak-kneed ….. walking across this metal grating with Paris rushing underneath me ….

After the sewers we needed a little light relief and so we went to the Museum of Military Uniforms and Maps.   I knew you'd be impressed with this choice!

It was very interesting and not a bit smelly.  In fact it was very, very impressive.  The uniforms included those actually worn by Napoleon and his commanders.  Except for the great coat he wore on the Russian front - which was a bit the worse for wear - but what else would you expect!  I was so enthralled I forgot to take pics of these wonders.  Instead, there is a painting of Napoleon at his coronation,  a very strange looking Paul and a gilded saddle.

To get to these two Museums we had to take the bus rather than the Metro (train).  Our first foray by bus.

Paul is so cunning, you know ....... he did his research and discovered that the locals can purchase a monthly Navigo pass for use on all public transport - Metro trains, regional trains, buses and bicycles.  Given we are staying for a month, he had the foresight to bring along an extra passport photo of each of us.  So yesterday, he fronts up at the local Metro station and negotiates (in French) the purchase of two, monthly passes, in plastic holders, complete with ID photos for unlimited use on any form of public transport.

If, like me, you thought you'd never see Paul use a bus, you would have been proud of him today ..... he used Google maps to find the closest bus stop, swiped his pass on the bus, gave an old lady his seat, helped her off with her shopping trolley, forgot to get off at the right stop,  went to the end terminus, way out in the 'burbs, and then came back along the route until he found the right stop, all without angst or bile.
It was a beautiful day for a bus ride!
